The village is named after Sir Philip de Gayton who, it is rumoured, had a daughter named Scholastica who is said to have murdered her husband. She had a sister called Julianna who had a daughter, Mabila. Julianna was later burned as it was believed that she was a witch. The de Gayton tombs are in the village church.
